Fdérik
Fdérik (formerly Fort-Gouraud) is an administrative center in the
Tiris Zemmour region in north-central
Mauritania.
Established in 1984, it is an important base for mining activity in
the area and at nearby Mount Ijill. Iron ore is transported from
Fdérik on the Mauritania Railway to the Atlantic port of
Nouadhibou from where it is
shipped to its destination.
The Mauritania Railway is a single rail line that spans 670 km. The
train that carries the iron ore can have a chain of wagons up to
three kilometers long.
