Ras al-Khaimah Ras Al Khaimah is a city in the northernmost emirate of the UAE, and the capital of Ras al-Khaimah emirate. The ruler since 1948 has been Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qassimi. Archeological excavations reveal that a settlement with an advanced civilization that carried on trade with the Indian subcontinent existed in Ras al-Khaimah. It was under British occupation for a long period in the 19th and 20th C, until independence in 1971. Iran occupied two of its islands, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb,
In 1972 it joined the UAE. Its economy
is based on agriculture. It was also once the center of the naval
strength of the southern Gulf States. The traditional occupations of
this emirate are fishing, trade and agriculture which have been
heavily modernized to meet the demands of the
UAE's economy.
It supplies the other emirates with
fruits, vegetables, milk, and poultry. The sea around Ras al-
Khaimah is rich in tuna fish. |
