Fateh al-Moudarres
(1922 - 1999)
Born in Aleppo,
Syria, Fateh al Moudarres originally taught himself realist
techniques before becoming inte rested
in Surrealism. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome
from 1954 to 1960 and developed a distinctive style of painting. He
was a founder of the contemporary art movement in Syria.
He abandoned the religious iconography of his early work for
non-objectivity in the 1960’s. After 1967 his work took on political
themes. Moudarres studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from
1969-1972.
Moudarres was dean and professor of the Faculty of Fine Arts in
Damascus until 1993, where his style influenced upcoming young
artists. He received many awards and medals of excellence. He wrote
several short stories and poetry books, and had individual and group
exhibitions in Syria, the Middle East, Europe and America.
