Abu Hasan Ahmad Bin Mohammed al-Tabari classified physicians into two categories: Philosopher physicians and non-philosopher physicians, with the following definitions:

Non-philosopher physicians’ interest is in diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Philosopher physicians’ interest extends to understanding pathophysiology and causation.

He wrote a book on Hippocratic remedies in which he described what non-philosopher physicians need to know.
