Zainaba

Born in 1930, Zainaba, a nurse from Mauritania, worked to educate midwives to more safely and effectively practice their skills, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and proper knowledge in treating wounds. Among other things, Zainaba taught midwives how to more safely practice circumcision, especially female circumcision, in a way that did not cause infection, disease, or other complications. She emphasized the importance of knowledge of the female reproductive system and anatomy for midwives.
