Architecture
El-Hakim, Mahmoud

(1907- )

Egyptian architect; he designed the Luxor Museum in 1973, and the Nubian Museum in Aswan in 1997. Both these buildings house treasures of Egypt’s past.

He received the
Aga Khan Award for Architecture for the Nubian Museum. In the main gallery is a statue of Ramses II (1304-1237 B.C.), builder of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel. The interior design of the space leads the visitor through the building and out to an exterior exhibition area designed to represent the Nile Valley.

In both museums the architect’s use of lighting gives the interiors a resemblance the dark ancient tombs from which the artifacts come.
